About RFC

Røldal Freeride is the most important competition for off-piste skiing in Northern Europe. The event is a natural meeting point for the top Norwegian and international riders at the end of a long winter. RFC has already created a respected arena amongst trendsetters in skiing and snowboarding around Europe and the rest of the world. The village of Røldal has, partly thanks to RFC gained a reputation as a world class off-piste skiing area, due to the steep, accessible mountains and unique snowdepths. The competition faces hold international level.

Since 2001, RFC has been arranged in the mountains accesible from Røldal Skisenter. We have had no serious injuries, but safe and spectacular riding. Thanks to our sponsors, good friends in Røldal Skisenter, all businesses in Røldal, Røldal and Korlevoll sports clubs, inhabitants of Røldal and Odda, and last but not least our friends who make this possible every year.

RFC is run without profit, and no salaries are paid, so all the money from sponsors are used to make the event the best possible for spectators and the safest possible for the athletes.

Freeride as a competition format:

Freeride competitions rank the athletes by judging line difficulty, flow, control, technique and aggresion down a mountain face. There are no gates, and riders can go down the mountain anywhere they want. This way, the winners are determined by skill and competence, not luck and guts. Simply stated, freeride is good old fashioned playing on skis, dating back to the 1830s when the people of Morgedal, Norway competed in ”Uvyrdslåm”, going down a mountain with several obstacles. Freeride is without a doubt the most spectacular form of alpine winter sport, for riders, spectators and photographers.
